Missouri’s Top Cycling Event Gateway Cup Qualifies Four Days on Prestigious USA Cycling National Criterium Calendar
Labor Day Weekend Event Held in Four Historic St. Louis Neighborhoods
St. Louis, MO – For the first time in 29 years, all four days of Missouri’s top cycling event, The Staenberg Group (TSG Realty) Gateway Cup www.gatewaycup.com, have been added to the prestigious USA Cycling National Criterium Calendar (NCC), the premier professionally sanctioned criterium racing series in North America. The Sunday race, the Giro della Montagna, will serve as the Season Finale for the USA Crits Championship Series (www.usacrits.com), a separate competitive series that offers up a separate prize list to participating elite teams.
“We are extremely thrilled and honored to receive NCC status for all four days of the Gateway Cup’s professional men’s and women’s cycling races,” said Mike Weiss, event organizer and owner of St. Louis-based Big Shark Bicycle Company. “The NCC consists of 16 of the premier criterium races nationwide with 27 days of racing, and the Gateway Cup will be hosting four of those 27 days. This is tremendous recognition in terms of professional cycling for Missouri and the City of St. Louis. The Giro della Montagna being designated the USA Crits Finale is the icing on the cake. We are looking forward to an exciting event.”
The TSG Realty Gateway Cup takes place Aug. 29 – Sept. 1 in the heart of four unique St. Louis neighborhoods – Lafayette Square, St. Louis Hills – Francis Park, The Italian Hill and Benton Park. Within each of these host communities, the race course is defined by an approximate one-mile lap known as a “criterium.” This Americanized style of racing appeals to both athletes and spectators alike as the peloton, or pack of cyclists, passes by every few minutes at impressive speeds, holding lines only inches apart from one another. Spectators can watch the race unfold lap after lap as the commentators announce race strategy and rev up the crowd, creating a better understanding and involvement with the events.
The TSG Realty Gateway Cup features eight successive races each day based on ability – ranging from beginner to professional. Each day is punctuated by the Men’s and Women’s Pro-Am Racing. In this race, 150 of the nation’s top cyclists hurl themselves around corners averaging 30 mph towards a dramatic, thrilling sprint finish. Racers will compete for $70,000 in prize money. Due to the equal prize list for pro men and pro women, the Gateway Cup is also on the Women’s Prestige Cycling Series www.womencyclists.com/prestige.php.
