1. Vittoria Zaffiro Pro Home Trainer Fold Tire

Our rating: 9 / 10

Pros:

  • lightweight
  • durable
  • Affordable
  • rolls fairly smooth
  • easily mounted on an existing rim
  • easy to inflate

Cons:

  • Slight learning curve to fold/unfold
  • inner rim wear can be caused by improper inflation
  • Could be a little more durable

The Vittoria Zaffiro Pro is my favorite tire due to the ease of mounting it onto an existing wheel. No additional spoke length is needed and it mounts directly to the hub for easy use. Not only is it easy to mount, it’s easy to inflate and fold up into a relatively small package for storage.

The Vittoria Zaffiro Pro folds up into a nice neat bundle that can easily be placed in tight storage situations. I’ve seen some tires in the past that fold up into complete messes. Not the case with this tire!

I love that the Vittoria Zaffiro Pro comes with a removable valve cap that’s designed to allow you to check tire pressure at a glance. The Zaffiro Pro comes with a minimum recommended pressure of 90 psi, but I’ve been able to ride this bike up to 100 psi with no issue.

2. Continental Hometrainer Folding Tire

Our rating: 9 / 10

Pros:

  • Folding
  • Easier to Fix Punctures
  • Cheap

If you want to cycle away from the road, but don’t want to take your bike with you because you’re tight on space, the Continental Hometrainer Folding Tire is a good choice for your off-road training.

Its construction will last as long as more durable ones and most importantly for indoor use it's very quiet. The Hometrainer tire is not suitable for use on the road.

Pros:

  • A good deal for riders looking to save on buying new trainer tires
  • Generous knobs on the tire provide a good amount of traction and rolling resistance for a trainer tire.
  • The kevlar belt can only be found on performance tires like this one and maintains good strength while making the tire foldable.

Cons:

  • You may want to spend the extra money on a premium tire like the Michelin Trainer, or the more basic Continental ContiTrainer.
  • The thin kevlar belt may prove less durable than other premium trainer tires.

A simple trainer tire that provides a good amount of grip and rolling resistance for a very cheap price with foldable kevlar belt.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do bike trainers ruin tires?

The simple and straightforward answer is yes. However, this has more to do with the tire size and the type of trainer that you’re using than it does the trainer itself.

If you’re using a tire that’s designed for training, most of these will be made of a harder material which also helps to resist wearing down on rough roads.

However, they will still wear down some when training. We suggest a tire from our list below of the best bike trainer tires.

If you’re using a trainer with a slick-like surface, like a lot of the popular rollers, this will cause most tires to wear out faster. However, you probably won’t get as good of a workout using these.

What is the best bike trainer stand?

If you sit down on most indoor bike trainer seats and notice your thighs touching the rollers, you will realize that the session will not go so well — which is frustrating. It may seem strange that you can get a better biking machine by simply putting it on the stand.

First, you need to have a proper stand!

What are the best bicycle tires?

Most bikes come with tires, but look at any cycling marketplace and you will see a vast selection of different bike tires.

Because of the high cost of bicycle tires, it is important that you buy the right ones for the type of riding that you will be doing.

What bike tires are the best?

Since the "best" bike tire depends on what you want to do with your bike, it is impossible to give a general answer.

What makes a good bike tire depends on what your purposes are for your bicycle.

Function: Is your bicycle for riding on pavement or off-road? Or a mix of both? These two different types of tires have vastly different requirements. Choosing the correct tire depends on whether you will be riding on trails, on the road, or some combination of both.

Is a trainer tire necessary?

A lot of people are surprised to learn that a bike trainer tire isn’t necessary for a good training session. Of course, using a trainer tire can speed up the process of your training session, but it certainly isn’t a must.

However, one thing trainer tires do is save you time and money. Going to the gym every other day can add up, especially if you have to travel to different training centers.

Using a bike trainer can help you get in a workout session at home with your own equipment. Instead of having to use a grimy gym bike, you have a trainer for your bike.

The best part is, kits can be purchased that are geared for use in both trainers. Using the same tire in both the trainer and the road can speed up your session.

Conclusion

Whether you want to use your bike trainer to get in great shape or to upgrade your performance in your local races, it’s important to pick the right tire. It can shave minutes off your times, help you climb better, and reduce fatigue on long rides and hard workouts. This year, we’ve found some excellent choices available.
